Flowers serve as an inexpensive yet beautiful gift. Picking up flowers can be fun and exciting. If you are planning to pick flowers for someone then the best time to do it is late evening or early morning. The reason behind this is that the sugar reserves in flowers during these times are the highest. Avoid picking flowers during the daytime, when the sun is at its peak. Heat from sun lowers the water content of flowers and thus, these are not able to look fresh for a longer period for time.
Try to pick flowers that are in bud or are half open. You must watch them slowly opening up. It’s amazing to see the petals color showing up. This looks more beautiful on roses and tulips. However, there are certain types of flowers that should be picked only when they are fully open. These include dahlias, hydrangeas, carnations, marigold and gerberas.
To make the flowers look fresh for a longer time, keep them in a plastic bucket which should be filled halfway with warm water. If possible, try to add a preservative to it. Flowers does not take water through sides of the stem, they take water only through its end. Another important tip is that you should never overcrowd the flowers in a bucket. Too many flowers cause squashing or bruising of the flower petals. Also, place the container or the bucket in a cool dry place. For short stemmed flowers, you must use a short container.
Allow flowers to stand in water for a good 4-5 hours, preferably overnight before arranging. This process is called conditioning. By doing this, the steps will get filled up with water and flowers will look fresh and crisp. Also, they will roughly last twice as long and be able to send flowers abroad. Flowers are beautiful; they add color and fragrance to your life.
