A Brief Guide to Choosing an Outdoor Pergola

Pergolas are outdoor structures that are used as decorative and practical backyard decorations.  Outdoor pergola structures have been in use for many centuries.  The earliest uses of pergolas were in agricultural communities and used as support structures for plants of edible fruits and vegetables to grow on.  Pergola outdoor living and décor usage did not start until about a century later.  Nowadays pergolas are used as a visually beautiful and useful shelter for backyards and in many public parks.

There are varying types of garden pergola designs.  An entryway pergola provides a shade for incoming visitors and is usually placed at the entrance or before the front door of a home.  Some pergolas have a solid cover that adds an extra level of detail to the design.  The cover also adds more shelter for the area underneath which makes the space more enjoyable especially on a hot summer day.  Aside from the front of a home, pergolas can be added to enhance the appearance and function of any area of your landscape.   An accent gateway pergola can be either arched or square and can be used to create an archway entry into your garden or barbeque area.  Gateway pergolas provide for a decorative and fancy transition from the inside of your home to the outside or between different areas of your backyard.

There is a choice of materials when it comes to what an outdoor pergola can be made of.  The most typical pergolas are made up of wood.  There are further choices to make within that category, such as in what type of wood to use.  Often recommended is cedar but that can be expensive and pricey to maintain.  Pine is also a very common pergola material that is less expensive than cedar.  However rotting is always a possibility with a wooden pergola and if that is a concern for you then you should definitely consider aluminum materials.  Outdoor aluminum pergolas are usually smaller in size than wooden structures but require less maintenance and are typically also cheaper to purchase.
